CIMA DA CONEGLIANO (GIOVANNI BATTISTA CIMA)
CHRIST ENTHRONED
Initially, this work would appear to have been part of an altar composition, possibly part of a predella (the lower part of a triptych or polyptych). This work reflects the talent of the artist "di far grande in piccolo", i.e. the ability to retain a monumental sense of shape and scale in a small format.
Provenance: the collection of F.Purtales (Berlin and St. Petersburg); the collection of O.E.Braz (St. Petersburg); transferred to the Hermitage after 1917 and from there to the State Museums Foundation; in the Pushkin Museum since 1928.
