COZZARELLI, GUIDOCCIO DI GIOVANNI (?)

THE BAPTISM OF CHRIST

This picture appears to have been trimmed. P.P.Muratov attributed to it to Cozzarelli. The Moscow painting repeats the central part of Cozzarelli's compostion The Baptism of Christ (dated to 1486) from the church of St. Bernadino in Sinalunga, after only minor changes. As regards the manner of execution, it resembles more closely works by Matteo D.Giovanni, who was Cozzarelli's mentor.

Provenance: acquired between 1880 and 1898 in Italy by D.A.Khomyakov, who donated in 1901 to the Rumyantsev Museum (Moscow); in the Pushkin Museum since 1924.
