DAMINI, PIETRO
ANNUNCIATION
The paintings of Pietro Damini are frequently attributed to masters of the Renaissance period; this also occurred with the given painting, which was acquired as a work by an unknown Venetian painter of the 16th century. Certain details, such as the sewing basket and also the poses of the figures are repeated in other works by the same author. The depiction of the Virgin Mary found in the Pushkin Museum's picture is repeated, for instance, in the composition The Appearance of Christ to Mary Magdalene, held in the municipal museum of Bassano del Grappa.
Provenance: acquired by the Pushkin Museum from O.V.Svarichovskaya (Moscow) in 1987.
