PORTRAIT OF CARDINAL GIOVANNI SALVIATI
Giovanni Salviati (1488-1553) belonged to one of the noblest families of Florence: he was a nephew of Pope Leo X and uncle of Cosimo I, Grand Duke of Tuscany.
In the past this portrait had been attributed to Francesco de' Rossi, known as Salviati and was published as Male Portrait, Portrait of a Writer or Portrait of a Prelate.
Provenance: till 1845 in the collection of Count D.P.Tatishchev (St. Petersburg), who bequeathed it to the Imperial Collections (the pictures were distributed among various imperial residences); transferred from the Great Kremlin Palace to the Rumyantsev Museum in 1919; in the Pushkin Museum since 1924.
