In the past this work was attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, in whose name it was engraved by Ignaz Sebastian Klauber for the third, unpublished, volume of the Hermitage Gallery [catalogue].
Provenance: presented by the Russian envoy in Rome, Count A. Y. Italinskii to Tsar Alexander I in 1811; assigned to the Hermitage in 1829; in the Pushkin Gallery since 1930.
