MAINARDI, SEBASTIANO or BASTIANO

THE NATIVITY

This work was attributed to Sebastiano Mainardi by V.E.Markova when acquired by the Pushkin Museum. The composition can be traced back to Minardi's fresco in the Orsini villa in the village of Barozzi near Florence. The same composition, with only minor changes, is repeated in an extensive group of works painted by the artists in the workshops of Domenico Ghirlandaio in which Sebastiano Mainardi worked.

Provenance: acquired by the Pushkin Museum from R.A.Kukushkina (Moscow) in 1978.
