PERUGINO, PIETRO (PIETRO VANNUCCI)
studio of
MADONNA AND CHILD
This composition in the collection of the Counts Stroganov was thought to be a work of Perugino himself. Other versions are known executed by artists from his workshop. One of them is in the Borghese Gallery in Rome and another in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. The picture in the Pushkin Museum collection is the best of the three.
Provenance: collection of the Counts Stroganov (St. Petersburg); transferred from the Stroganov palace-museum (Petrograd) to the Hermitage in 1922; in the Pushkin Museum since 1930.
