SANTI DI TITO

ALLEGORY OF SUMMER

According to the old inscription on the reverse, in the past this work was considered to have been by Jacopo Pontormo and later one by Jacopo Zucchi. V.E.Markova assigned it to Santi di Tito. It would appear to represent an allegory for the seasons of the year and depicts summer occupations linked with work and leisure in the bosom of Nature. This subject is encountered in the work of many Florentine Mannerists.

Provenance: in the collection of the Gabrichevskii family (Moscow); acquired by the Rumyantsev Museum from E.V. Gabrichevskaya in 1917; in the Pushkin Museum since 1924.
