SANTI, GIOVANNI
MADONNA WITH CHILD AND TWO ANGELS
One of the few easel paintings by Giovanni Santi, Raphael's father. The artist worked at the court of the Duke of Urbino, where he encountered the work of Dutch painters, in particular that of Jos van Ghent. His acquaintance with the North-European artistic tradition is clearly visible in the picture from the Pushkin Museum in the approach to colour and the manner in which the detail has been worked.
Provenance: in the collection of the Counts Shuvalov in St. Petersburg; transferred from the Shuvalov-Palace Museum to the Pushkin Museum in 1924.
