In the Inventory of the St-Petersburg Palace of the Yusupovs this picture was registered in 1845-1848 as a work by Michelangelo and described as follows: "The Crucifixion of the Saviour with the Mother of God and Mary Magdalene standing by the Cross". In the 1930 catalogue of the Yusupov Gallery the Crucifixion was attributed to Sodoma.

Provenance: acquired from the merchant Rodionov (Moscow) in 1854 for the collection of the Princes Yusupov and held in their palace in St. Petersburg; in the Hermitage after 1924; in the Pushkin Museum since 1927.
