TIZIANO VECELLIO
copy after (?)
MADONNA AND CHILD IN NICHE
While in the Hermitage collection this work was attributed to Titian – early period; at one time it was thought to be a copy of a lost original by Giorgione and also to have been a work by Francesco Vecellio. The layer of varnish covering the painted surface had made it difficult to form a judgment of the work's quality.
Provenance: acquired in Paris for the Hermitage by Prince V. S. Trubetskoi in 1819; in the Pushkin Museum since 1924.
