While in the collection of Count Brühl and in the Hermitage, this work was considered as part of a pair with The Madonna and Christ Child which, like the work in the Pushkin Museum, was sold from the Hermitage in 1854 (its current whereabouts are unknown); auctioned on instructions from Tsar Nicholas I in 1854; acquired by the Pushkin Museum from the Ostafievo museum-estate (collection of the Vyazemskii-Sheremetievs) in 1924.
