Castiglione turned for the first time to mythological subjects in the 1640s when he was working in Rome and strongly influenced by Poussin.
Provenance: acquired for the Hermitage from the Croz collection (Paris) in 1772; then in the Catherine Palace at Tsarskoye Selo; transferred to the Rumyantsev Museum in 1862; in the Pushkin Museum since 1924.
