FERRARI, LUCA, called LUCA DA REGGIO
SOPHONISBA
This painting was acquired by the Museum as a work by an unknown master: the current attribution was by the author of this catalogue. Parallels for it are provided by other compositions of Luca Ferrari, in which he repeats without fail the female type characteristic of his work. The picture exemplifies the finest feature of this artist's talent for painting and his subtle use of colour. At the same time there is no hint of the academic coldness to be found in some of Luca Ferrari's late works.
Provenance: acquired in 1978 from O.N.Matveyeva (Moscow).
