GARGIULO, DOMENICO, called MICCO SPADARO
THE TRANSFER OF THE ARK OF THE LORD TO THE CITY OF JERUSALEM BY KING DAVID
Signature bottom centre as a monogram of the intertwined letters DG.
The picture in the Pushkin Museum reveals close artistic links between Gargiulo and the German painter Schönfeldt who came to Naples in the late 1640s. Groups of middle-ground figures also reveal the influence of the virtuoso drawings of Jacques Callot and Stefano della Bella. The Moscow canvas demonstrates the brilliant mastery of Gargiulo for constructing scenes with many figures and his rich experience as a landscape painter and master of architectural compositions.
Provenance: acquired by the Pushkin Museum from the State Museums Foundation (Novo-Devichii Convent) in 1929.
