GIAQUINTO, CORRADO
APOTHEOSIS OF SPANISH MONARCHY (?)
The identification of the subject remains imprecise; it is linked with information available earlier concerning the association of this composition, familiar in many variants, with the project for decorating the Royal Residence in Madrid which never came to fruition. Later, a more convincing explanation was proposed, namely that this group of pictures was painted in the course of work on the ceiling of the Rondanini-Sanseverino Palace (Rome). (Earlier, in the Palace of the Marquises of Santa Croce, Palermo).
Provenance: held in the collection of G.A.Brokar (Moscow) at the end of the 19th century; after 1900 the property of his heirs; in the State Museums Foundation from 1918; in the Pushkin Museum since 1924.
