At one time while in the collection of the Yusupovs this work was attributed to the Spaniard, Ribera. A variant of the composition is held in the Bardini Museum (Florence).
Provenance: in the collection of Prince N.B.Yusupov and held in his Moscow Palace until 1815; transferred to the Arkhangelskoye estate 1837 (environs of Moscow); held in St. Petersburg (Yusupov Palace on the Moika River) after 1854; in the Yusupov palace-museum (Petrograd) 1919-24; in the Pushkin Museum since 1924.
