SAINT SEBASTIAN

This picture in the Pushkin Museum numbers among the works of the master most highly valued by his contemporaries. It was often mentioned in writings of the 17^th and 18^th centuries. A sonnet was devoted to this work by the Bologna poet, Luigi Manzini.

Frena, CENTIN, quel nobile portento
Quello stupor del'Arte, ond'hai diletto
Di richiamare il gia beato petto
De l'Eroe di Narbone, al rio tormento.

Frena, dico, il pennello: ahi che gil sento
Sospirarsi di nuouo esangue oggetto
Delfurente Idolatra: e quindi astretto
A turbar fra le pene il suo contento.

Ma che? so forte, e luminoso il pingi,
Che nel misto di luce, e di valore,
Di doglia si, ma gloriosa, il cingi.

Provenance: painted as a commission for Nicolo Lemmi (Bologna); in the collection of Abbot Cesare Taruffi (Bologna) in the second half of the 18^th century; in the collection of Empress Josephine at Malmaison at the beginning of the 19^th century; acquired from her daughter, Duchesse de Saint-Leu for the Hermitage in 1829; transferred to the Rumyantsev Museum in 1862; in the Pushkin Museum since 1924.
