MAGNASCO, ALESSANDRO

THE CRUCIFIXION

After 1710

canvas, oil

91 x 61 cm

Inv.: 141

Acquired by the Museum as a work by Giuseppe Bazzani; Pallucchini and Valkanover were the first to attribute it to Magnasco. It would appear to have been executed as a sketch for an altarpiece never completed, as is indicated by the shape of the top of the composition. The theme of the Crucifixion is to be found in a number of Magnasco's drawings: some of these are linked with the picture in the Pushkin Museum.

Provenance: apparently acquired by P.P.Vyazemskii in the mid-19th century; held in the Ostafievo estate near Moscow (collection of Vyazemskii-Sheremetievs); transferred from the Ostafievo estate-museum to the Pushkin Museum in 1924.
