Together with another composition from the Pushkin Museum (Inv. No.1485) and two from the Hermitage, this work belongs to a series of canvases in which Panini recorded the interiors of four famous Roman basilicas – S. Paolo fuori le Mura, S. Giovanni in Laterano, Cathedral of St Peter and Santa Мaria Maggiore.
Provenance: acquired as part of the collection of N.B.Yusupov before 1827 and held in his Moscow Palace; transferred to St Petersburg (Yusupov Palace on the Moika River); held in the palace-museum of the Yusupovs (Petrograd) from 1919 to 24; in the Pushkin Museum since 1924.
