ROSA, SALVATORE
studio or imitation of
SOLDIERS PLAYING DICE
A similar picture, signed by the artist but smaller in size, is held in the Dulwich College Picture Gallery (London). The canvas in the Pushkin Museum, according to G. Foss, is an old copy from that work. According to the generally accepted date the picture in the Dulwich Gallery was painted around 1656. Rosa himself engraved the figure of the soldier, using etching techniques.
Provenance: acquired for the Hermitage from the Croz collection (Paris) in 1772; in the Pushkin Gallery since 1924.
