THE DEATH OF CLEOPATRA
While in the Vishnevskii collection this painting was considered to be the work of an unknown 17th-century Italian master and later perhaps to have been by Pier Francesco Mola. The author of this catalogue subsequently re-attributed it. It is an excellent example of the mature painting of Trevisani, whom Charles de Brosses referred to as one of Europe's leading painters. Compositions with a depiction of nude female figures are to be found on several occasions in the work of this artist.
Provenance: in the collection of F.E.Vishnevskii (Moscow); donated by F.K.Vishnevskii to the Ministry of Culture in 1970; in the Pushkin Museum since 1985.
