FUNI, ACHILLE VIRGILIO SOCRATE
REBECCA BY A WELL
Signed and dated bottom right: Milano. A. Funi 1924
This picture in the Pushkin Museum reflects an important stage in the work of the artist. In 1922 Funi, together with other like-minded artists, founded the group "Sette del Novocento". In 1923 he took part in its first group exhibition in the Pesaro Gallery in Milan and in 1924 its work was exhibited at the Venice Biennale. Characteristic of Funi's work was his use of classical motifs drawn from Italian art. A preliminary drawing for this picture is held in the Pushkin Museum.
Provenance: acquired by the State Museum of New Western Art from Italy in exchange for works by Soviet artists in 1930; in the Pushkin Museum since 1948.
