In the seventeen panels arranged around the central depiction there are scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary.
There are inlays of rock crystal round the halo. At the level of Mary's shoulders there is the traditional monogram consisting of the Greek letters MP (on the left) and θV (on the right): Maria Theotokos (Maria Mothеr of God).
Provenance: acquired in Rome in 1863 by P.I.Sebastyanov, who donated it to the Rumyantsev Museum in Moscow in 1864; transferred to the State Historical Museum in 1924; in the Pushkin Museum since 1932.
