From the time when it was in the Shchokin collection this work was dated to the beginning of the Venetian school in the 15th century and later to that of the 14th century. M. Boshkovich attributed it to Giovanni da Bologna, a Venetian master influenced by Lorenzo Veneziano and Quarento from Padua.

Provenance: acquired in Italy during the first decade of the 20th century by M.S.Shchokin, who donated it to the Pushkin Museum in 1909.
