MARCO DI MARTINO DA VENEZIA (MARCO VENEZIANO) ?
MADONNA AND CHILD ENTHRONED WITH TWO DONORS AND ANGELS
This icon is a rare example of the Venetian school in the first third of the 14th century. It is also attributed to the anonymous Master of Maria's Coronation from Washington. Virtually nothing is known about the work of Marco, elder brother of Paolo Veneziano apart from the fact that he was a painter registered in his documents as "magister Marcus pictor".
Provenance: acquired by the Pushkin Museum from the Museum of the History of Religion (Donskoi Monastery) in Moscow in 1935.
