Initially a fragment of a polyptych. In the 19th century the work was clumsily restored. The original panel was made significantly thinner and the original gilding was completely removed and replaced by new gilding. In the Shchokin collection it was considered to have been the work of Simone Martini and later that of his pupil, Lippo Memmi.
