Compositions of Veronese on this subject mentions Carlo Ridolfi (1648), when describing the collection of Felice Pallavicini in Genoa. For a long time this work was considered one of Veronese's own, even during the time when it was in the Hermitage collection. A canvas with a similar composition had been held previously in the Borletti collection in Milan and a further one in a private collection in London.

Provenance: from the study of M. Julien (Paris); acquired by Empress Catherine II for the Hermitage between 1766 and 1768; in the Pushkin Museum since 1924.
